The car's time relative to this set time is measured at each marshalling post , and the difference is referred to as the car's "delta" time.

In the early days of Grand Prix racing, a driver would be allowed to continue a race in their teammate's car should theirs develop a problem – in the modern era, cars are so carefully fitted to drivers that this has become impossible.
In recent years, the emphasis has been on changing refuelling and tyre change regulations. Since the 2010 season, refuelling – which was reintroduced in 1994 – has not been allowed, to encourage less tactical racing following safety concerns. The rule requiring both compounds of tyre to be used during the race was introduced in 2007, again to encourage racing on the track. The safety car is another relatively recent innovation that reduced the need to deploy the red flag, allowing races to be completed on time for a growing international live television audience. The current qualifying system was adopted in the 2006 season.
Known as "knock-out" qualifying, it is split into three periods, known as Q1, Q2, and Q3. Drivers are allowed as many laps as they wish within each period. After each period, all times are reset, and only a driver's fastest lap in that period counts. Any timed lap started before the end of that period may be completed, and will count toward that driver's placement. The number of cars eliminated in each period is dependent on the total number of cars entered into the championship.
Currently, with 20 cars, Q1 runs for 18 minutes, and eliminates the slowest five drivers. During this period, any driver whose best lap takes longer than 107% of the fastest time in Q1 will not be allowed to start the race without permission from the stewards. Otherwise, all drivers proceed to the race albeit in the worst starting positions. In Q2, the 15 remaining drivers have 15 minutes to set one of the ten fastest times and proceed to the next period. Finally, Q3 lasts 12 minutes and sees the remaining ten drivers decide the first ten grid positions. At the beginning of the 2016 Formula 1 season, the FIA introduced a new qualifying format, whereby drivers were knocked out every 90 seconds after a certain amount of time had passed in each session.
The aim was to mix up grid positions for the race, but due to unpopularity the FIA reverted to the above qualifying format for the Chinese GP, after running the format for only two races. This approach lasted until the end of 2002 before the rules were changed again because the teams were not running in the early part of the session to take advantage of better track conditions later on. During this period, the championship rules were changed frequently by the FIA with the intention of improving the on-track action and cutting costs. Other changes included the qualifying format, the points scoring system, the technical regulations, and rules specifying how long engines and tyres must last. Bridgestone then went on to sign a contract on 20 December 2007 that officially made them the exclusive tyre supplier for the next three seasons. On the track, the McLaren and Williams teams dominated the 1980s and 1990s.
Brabham were also being competitive during the early part of the 1980s, winning two Drivers' Championships with Nelson Piquet. The rivalry between racers Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost became F1's central focus during 1988 and continued until Prost retired at the end of 1993. Senna died at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix after crashing into a wall on the exit of the notorious curve Tamburello. The FIA worked to improve the sport's safety standards since that weekend, during which Roland Ratzenberger also lost his life in an accident during Saturday qualifying. Since 1994, three track marshals have lost their lives, one at the 2000 Italian Grand Prix, the second at the 2001 Australian Grand Prix and the third at the 2013 Canadian Grand Prix. Grids were generally limited to 26 cars – if the race had more entries, qualification would also decide which drivers would start the race.
During the early 1990s, the number of entries was so high that the worst-performing teams had to enter a pre-qualifying session, with the fastest cars allowed through to the main qualifying session. The qualifying format began to change in the early 2000s, with the FIA experimenting with limiting the number of laps, determining the aggregate time over two sessions, and allowing each driver only one qualifying lap. Each car is allocated one set of the softest tyres for use in Q3. The cars that qualify for Q3 must return them after Q3; the cars that do not qualify for Q3 can use them during the race. The first ten drivers, i.e. the drivers through to Q3 must start the race on the tyre which set the fastest time in Q2, unless the weather requires the use of wet-weather tyres, in which case all of the rules about the tyres won't be followed. All of the drivers that did not participate in Q3 have free tyre choice for the start of the race.
Any penalties that affect grid position are applied at the end of qualifying. Grid penalties can be applied for driving infractions in the previous or current Grand Prix, or for changing a gearbox or engine component. If a car fails scrutineering, the driver will be excluded from qualifying but will be allowed to start the race from the back of the grid at the race steward's discretion. It begins with two free practice sessions on Friday , and one free practice on Saturday.
Additional drivers are allowed to run on Fridays, but only two cars may be used per team, requiring a race driver to give up their seat. A qualifying session is held after the last free practice session. This session determines the starting order for the race on Sunday. As of 2019, each team may have no more than two cars available for use at any time. Each driver may use no more than four engines during a championship season unless they drive for more than one team.
If more engines are used, they drop ten places on the starting grid of the event at which an additional engine is used. The only exception is where the engine is provided by a manufacturer or supplier taking part in its first championship season, in which case up to five may be used by a driver. Each driver may use no more than one gearbox for six consecutive events; every unscheduled gearbox change requires the driver to drop five places on the grid unless they failed to finish the previous race due to reasons beyond the team's control. If less than 75% of the race laps are completed by the winner, then only half of the points listed in the table are awarded to the drivers and constructors. This has happened on only five occasions in the history of the championship, and it had a notable influence on the final standing of the 1984 season. The last occurrence was at the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix when the race was called off after just 3 laps behind a safety car due to torrential rain.
Formula One is in São Paulo this weekend for the Brazilian Grand Prix and Saturday brings a sprint race to determine the starting order for Sunday's race. Traditional qualifying ran on Friday and set the starting grid for a 100-kilometer sprint race on Saturday. The drivers will run 24 laps to determine the grid for Sunday's race. Ello and welcome along to our live blog for Saturday's Saudi Arabia Grand Prix qualifying session, as we work out the starting grid for the penultimate race of the 2021 Formula 1 season.
Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton are the favourites for pole position and, with overtaking so difficult at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, starting at the front will be crucial. F1 can issue all the social media posts it likes about Hamilton being the pole winner 'for statistical purposes', but the answer to the question 'who is on pole position for the grand prix? A typical circuit features a stretch of straight road on which the starting grid is situated. The layout of the rest of the circuit varies widely, although in most cases the circuit runs in a clockwise direction.
Those few circuits that run anticlockwise (and therefore have predominantly left-handed corners) can cause drivers neck problems due to the enormous lateral forces generated by F1 cars pulling their heads in the opposite direction to normal. A single race requires hotel rooms to accommodate at least 5,000 visitors. Under normal circumstances, the winner of the race is the first driver to cross the finish line having completed a set number of laps. The race begins with a warm-up lap, after which the cars assemble on the starting grid in the order they qualified. This lap is often referred to as the formation lap, as the cars lap in formation with no overtaking .
The warm-up lap allows drivers to check the condition of the track and their car, gives the tyres a chance to warm up to increase traction, and also gives the pit crews time to clear themselves and their equipment from the grid. This period featured teams managed by road-car manufacturers Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Maserati. The first seasons featured pre-war cars like Alfa's 158. They were front-engined, with narrow tyres and 1.5-litre supercharged or 4.5-litre naturally aspirated engines. The 1952 and 1953 World Championships were run to Formula Two regulations, for smaller, less powerful cars, due to concerns over the lack of Formula One cars available. When a new Formula One formula for engines limited to 2.5 litres was reinstated to the world championship for 1954, Mercedes-Benz introduced the advanced W196.
This featured innovations such as desmodromic valves and fuel injection, as well as enclosed streamlined bodywork. Mercedes drivers won the championship for two years, before the team withdrew from all motorsport in the wake of the 1955 Le Mans disaster. Pole position is for the driver who wins a race but the starting grid for that race is detrrmined by a qualifying but being the fastest there doesn't get you anything but a fastest lap. Then for the main race techically the slowest guy could be starting on pole by winning a race but driving the slowest fastest lap in that race. But what makes it even interesting is that the first race gives you points which it's actually a qualifying but the fastest qualifier doesn't get any points. It was striking that the FIA's statement announcing the new sprint race rules noted only that the format changes would include "awarding pole position to the fastest driver in qualifying on Friday".
But F1's explanation of its new rules confirmed the only change is a cosmetic one. Only the top two drivers in the second round solidify their starting spots for the Daytona 500 — on the front row. The rest of the lineup is set in the Bluegreen Vacations Duels, two races for which the starting lineups are set based on the speeds from the single-car qualifying session. In the earlier history of Formula One, many races took place outside the World Championship, and local championships run to Formula One regulations also occurred.
These events often took place on circuits that were not always suitable for the World Championship, and featured local cars and drivers as well as those competing in the championship. Although the UK's Stirling Moss was able to compete regularly, he was never able to win the world championship and has been described by The Independent as "The greatest driver to never win the world championship". In a seven-year span between 1955 and 1961, Moss finished as championship runner-up four times and in third place the other three times.
Fangio, however, achieved the record of winning 24 of the 52 races he entered - a record that holds to this day. National championships existed in South Africa and the UK in the 1960s and 1970s. Non-championship Formula One events were held by promoters for many years. However, due to the increasing cost of competition, the last of these occurred in 1983.
Two and a half hours long, multiple red flags, tons of drama, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton making hard contact, and huge implications. The penultimate race on the F1 calendar ended with Hamilton getting the win amid controversy, and now there's a virtual tie for the championship going into the final race. Hamilton seemed destined to cut into Verstappen's series lead as he got off to a fantastic start, but Red Bull got a huge break with a red flag while Verstappen held the lead. But then Verstappen got his own bad break on the re-start with a dicey move and had to give up track position. Finally, we also had a case where Hamilton hit Verstappen in an apparent miscommunication that became controversial as Hamilton said Verstappen braked and caused the hit. That way, you can essentially ignore how the Saturday grid is shaping up and know that by looking at the fastest laps, you're seeing the fight for Sunday's grid.
But it raises the stakes on the first qualifying runs of a session, since if a driver messes up, it still counts for Saturday. You could get some mixed-up grids that way, but to me, it's not a gimmick because the format is punishing genuine mistakes and demanding perfection on every run. Aston Martin have already done their shakedownUnfortunately F1 seems to have persuaded itself that semantics hold the solution to all its problems. In much the same way it previously thought by referring to its new events as 'sprint qualifying' people might not notice they were, in fact, races. Proving how flawed that idea was, it has now dropped 'qualifying' from the name, even though they continue to serve the purpose of being grid-setting sessions for the grand prix. In the first ever sprint qualifying event, held at Silverstone, Lewis Hamilton lined up first but was passed off the line by Max Verstappen.
With that, for the first time, pole position had been won not with a flying lap but a flying start. Some races, particularly in the UK, including the Race of Champions, Oulton Park International Gold Cup and the International Trophy, were attended by the majority of the world championship contenders. Formula One is the highest class of international racing for open-wheel single-seater formula racing cars sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile . The World Drivers' Championship, which became the FIA Formula One World Championship in 1981, has been one of the premier forms of racing around the world since its inaugural season in 1950. The word formula in the name refers to the set of rules to which all participants' cars must conform.
A Formula One season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix, which take place worldwide on both purpose-built circuits and closed public roads. So they have a qualifying for the main GP on Friday which sets the grid for the Sunday. They could then, as some have suggested, use part of the result of the qualifying on Friday to set the grid for the sprint on Saturday.
The sprint race takes place on Saturday, with the points set by the FIA which do contribute to the two championships. However, the result of the sprint does not set the grid for the main GP on Sunday. This is still set on Friday's qualifying result with the pole sitter being the fastest qualifier. Aside from the occasional, necessary evil of grid penalties, this largely holds true. It should have come to no surprise to anyone in F1, when they dreamt up the sprint qualifying format last year, that changing the definition of pole position was going to be a hard sell to fans. What did he make of F1 ending a tradition which dates back to the very first world championship of decide the pole position winner using timed laps, and replacing it with a one-third-distance race?
In the early years of Formula One, before the world championship was established, there were around twenty races held from late Spring to early Autumn in Europe, although not all of these were considered significant. Most competitive cars came from Italy, particularly Alfa Romeo. After the start of the world championship, these non-championship races continued. In the 1950s and 1960s, there were many Formula One races which did not count for the World Championship; in 1950 a total of twenty-two Formula One races were held, of which only six counted towards the World Championship.
In 1952 and 1953, when the world championship was run to Formula Two regulations, non-championship events were the only Formula One races that took place. It was announced on 29 July 2011, that Sky Sports and the BBC would team up to show the races in F1 from 2012 to 2018. Sky launched a dedicated channel, Sky Sports F1 which covered all races live without commercial interruption as well as live practice and qualifying sessions, along with F1 programming, including interviews, archive action and magazine shows.
In 2012 the BBC broadcast live coverage of half of the races in the season. The BBC ended its television contract after the 2015 season, three years earlier than planned. The free-to-air TV rights were picked up by Channel 4 until the end of the 2018 season. Sky Sports F1 coverage remained unaffected and BBC Radio 5 Live and 5 Live Sports Extra coverage was extended until 2021. Following their purchase of the commercial rights to the sport in 2017, Liberty Media announced their vision for the future of Formula One at the 2018 Bahrain Grand Prix.
